Thomas Warton (1728-1790) was a literary historian and critic, and from 1785-1790 was the English Poet Laureate. He was the son of poet Thomas Warton “the Elder”, and was Professor of Poetry at Oxford University from 1757-1767. His first major work was Observations on the Faerie Queene of Spenser, published in 1754, but he was best known for his three-volume History of English Poetry (1774-1781).
