Ralph Carr was the son of Ralph Carr and Margaret Paxton. He married Mary Vane (1730-1781), daughter of Henry Vane (1705-1758) of Raby Castle, 1st Earl of Darlington, on 17th October 1753. They had no children. His main residence was Cocken Hall, a 17th century house on the banks of the River Wear near Chester-le-Street, County Durham, opposite the ruins of Finchale Priory. He owned a one-third share in the estate of East Denton, which Montagu purchased from him in November 1760 for £2,500.
