Sir William Jones (1748-1794) was an Anglo-Welsh lawyer, philologist and scholar, founder of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta. In 1772 Jones published a volume of Poems, Consisting Chiefly of Translations from the Asiatick Languages, together with Two Essays on the Poetry of Eastern Nations and on the Arts commonly called Imitative. (Oxford: Elmsly and Prince, 1772).
