Thomas Hay, 9th Earl of Kinnoull (1710–1787), earlier Viscount Dupplin, a politician inclined to Whiggism, ambassador from George III to the Portuguese Court, and “a very literary nobleman”, according to James Cossar Ewart, Biographical Sketches of Eminent Characters (London, 1830), 320. He was the Duchess of Portland’s cousin on his mother’s side; his mother Abigail Hay, née Harley, was the Duchess of Portland’s aunt.
