Katherine "Kitty" Botham was the third daughter of Rev John Botham (1710-1773) and Lydia Lumley (1713-1753). Her grandmother, Lydia Light (1685-1725) was the half-sister of Matthew Robinson, Elizabeth Montagu’s father. Her mother died when she was only eight years old, and Elizabeth Montagu took an interest in Kitty and her sister Mary (1742-1777), taking them with her to visit Tunbridge Wells, paying for their education and arranging their marriages. Kitty married James Steuart [sic] on 17th August 1767 and had four children.
