Gender: F

Elizabeth D’Aeth (1682-1721) was the daughter of Rear-Admiral Sir John Narborough (1640-1688) and Elizabeth Hill (1658-1732). In 1701she married Sir Thomas D’Aeth (1678-1745), who was MP for Canterbury from 1708-1710 and for Sandwich from 1715-1722. They had six sons and six daughters. After her father’s death, her mother married Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, a naval commander who took Elizabeth’s two sons, John and James Narborough, to sea with him on an expedition that ended in calamity: owing to a navigational error, four warships were wrecked off the Scilly Isles, with the loss of over 1,500 lives. The two brothers died and Sir Cloudesley himself was reputedly murdered by a local woman for the sake of his emerald ring. As a result, Elizabeth D’Aeth inherited the Narborough family estate at Knowlton Court near Dover. Her daughter Bethia D’Aeth became Lady Palmer and later Mrs Cosnan.
