Emma Gilbert was the only child of John Gilbert (1693-1761), who was Archbishop of York from 1763-1767. Three days before her father’s death, she married George Edgcumbe (1720-1795), a naval officer who had served under Admiral Edward Boscawen at the Siege of Louisbourg. In 1761 he succeeded to the Barony of Mount Edgcumbe following the death of his brother. He was created 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in 1789. Their estate was Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. They had one son.
