Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holderness was born on 17 May 1718.1 He was the son of Robert Darcy, 3rd Earl of Holderness and Lady Frederica Susanna Schomberg. In 1743 he married Mary Doublet; of their three children, only Lady Amelia Darcy survived infancy. Holderness was successively British ambassador to Venice and to The Hague, and Secretary of State for the Southern and Northern Departments. From 1771-1776 he was governor of two of the sons of King George III. From 1765-1778 he was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, with his official residence at Walmer Castle in Kent.
