Shute Barrington (1734-1826) was the youngest son of the 1st Viscount Barrington. His brother, the 2nd Viscount, was Secretary of War during the war of American Independence, and obtained for him the position of chaplain to George III. He became a canon of Christ Church, Oxford, St Paul’s and Windsor. He was Bishop of Llandaff from 1769-1782, Bishop of Salisbury from 1782-1791 and Bishop of Durham (one of the richest sees) from 1791 until his death in 1826 at the age of ninety-one. During his time as Bishop of Salisbury, he carried out an official Visitation of his diocese which was observed by Elizabeth Montagu, whose seat at Sandleford was in the diocese. (See Carter to Montagu 21st July 1786.) He favoured the evangelical wing of the Church of England and was a friend of Hannah More, who often visited him at his house at Mongewell in Oxfordshire.
