Louis Philippe Joseph d’Orléans (1747-1793) was the son of Louis Philippe d’Orléans, and a member of the cadet branch of the French royal family. He received the title of Duke of Chartres on the death of his grandfather, Louis d’Orléans, in 1752, and of Duke of Orléans in 1785. He actively supported the French Revolution and was a strong advocate for replacing absolute by constitutional monarchy. In 1792, he changed his name to Philippe Égalité. He voted for the death of his cousin, King Louis XVI, but was himself guillotined in November 1793 during the Reign of Terror. His son Louis Philippe d’Orléans became King of the French after the July Revolution of 1830.
