John Elliot (1747-1787) was a prolific physician and member of the Royal Society, with a series of publications on medical science and natural philosophy in the early 1780s. On the 9th of July 1787, he attacked a woman named Mary Boydell with a pair of pistols, firing blanks at her. He was arrested and, on pleading insanity, confined to Newgate, where he died on the 22nd of July, having refused to eat since his admission.
