Hester Maria Thrale (1764-1857) was the daughter of Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi. Dr Johnson, who taught her Latin, gave her the nickname “Queeney”. She and her mother had a difficult relationship, and when her mother made a second marriage to Gabriele Piozzi, who had been her music teacher, she left the family home and went to live in London with Mrs Beaver. In 1808, at the age of 44, she became the second wife of George Elphinstone, 1st Viscount Keith, a wealthy retired Admiral; they had one daughter. She lived to be 92. The letters she received from her mother, Dr Johnson and Fanny Burney were published in 1934.
