Caroline Scott (1717-1782) came from an influential Kent family, being the daughter of George Scott of Scott’s Hall near Ashford. She married Thomas Best (c1713-95) of Chilston Park, Kent. He inherited a large fortune from his grandfather’s brewery business in Chatham, and was MP for Canterbury from 1741-1754 and again from 1761-1768 (when he was succeeded by Matthew Robinson Morris). He was Lieutenant-Governor of Dover Castle and Deputy Warden of the Cinque Ports from 1762 until his death. They had no children.
