Warren Hastings (1732–1818) was the first Governor-General of India, from 1773 to 1785. He resigned in 1784 and returned to England. On 3 April 1787 he was impeached for corruption by Pitt the Younger and his administration. The trial, which began at Westminster Hall on 13 February 1788, continued for seven years. He was acquitted on 23 April 1795.
