The elder child and only son of Edward Wortley Montagu (1678–1761), MP, and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (bap. 1689, d. 1762), writer and traveller. He frequently ran away, could not settle to a profession, and was an exasperation to his parents, who both disinherited him. He ran up huge debts, married a woman of humble origins, but abandoned her and later committed bigamy. He travelled widely in the countries of the Middle East and at one point converted to Islam.
