Gender: M
Montagu Pennington (1762-1849) was Elizabeth Carter’s nephew, the youngest son of her sister Margaret Carter (1725-1798). He was Elizabeth Montagu’s godson, and named in her honour. He travelled on the Continent for four months with Elizabeth Montagu and Matthew Robinson Montagu in 1776. He took holy orders, and in 1789 was appointed to the living of Sutton, near Dover, and in 1803 to Westwell, near Ashford, but for nearly twenty years from about 1788, he lived with his aunt in her house in Deal, which she had bequeathed to him on her death. He was curate-in-charge of the parish of Walmer, and from 1806 vicar of Northbourne, near Deal, and from 1814 perpetual curate of St George’s Chapel, Deal. He married Mary Watts (1763-1830), widow of a naval captain, but had no children. He edited his aunt’s letters to Elizabeth Montagu, Catherine Talbot and Elizabeth Vesey, and published a memoir of her life.
